ACT Test

The ACT Test is made up of four subtests: English, Mathematics, Reading & Science Reasoning. Click on the links below to find out more information about each subtest as well as tips for studying for each of them.

English Test
The English Test is made up of 75 questions which you will have 45 minutes to complete. Punctuation, grammar & usage and sentence structure are tested on the English Test. Spelling, vocabulary and rules of grammar are NOT tested. There will be five passages on this test, each followed by multiple-choice questions.

English Testing Tips:
1. Pace yourself.
2. Carefully examine the passages before responding.
3. Note the differences in the answer choices.
4. Determine the best answer.

Mathematics Test
The Mathematics Test is made up of 60 questions which you will have 60 minutes to complete. Basic formulas and computational skills are tested on the Math Test. Complex formulas and extensive problem-solving are NOT tested. And remember, calculators may be used on the Math portion of the ACT Test.

Math Testing Tips:
1. Pace yourself.
2. Use a calculator wisely.
3. Solve the problem and locate your solution among the choices.
4. Check your work.

Reading Test
The Reading Test is made up of 40 questions which you will have 35 minutes to complete. Reading comprehension is the main area that will be tested. The Reading Test is made up of numerous passages which are followed by multiple-choice questions. The general content areas that will be covered are social studies, natural sciences, fiction and humanities.

Reading Testing Tips:
1. Pace yourself.
2. Read the passages carefully.
3. Refer back to the passage when answering the questions.
4. Pay attention to the topic sentences of each paragraph.

Science Reasoning Test
The Science Reasoning Test is made up of 40 questions which you will have 35 minutes to complete. Interpretation, analysis, evaluation, reading and problem-solving skills in the natural sciences will all be tested. The main content areas covered are biology, chemistry, physics and earth science.

Science Reasoning Testing Tips:
1. Pace yourself.
2. Read the passages carefully.
3. Note different viewpoints in various passages.
