PSAT Test Questions

The PSAT/NMSQT is a practice test for the SAT I. Many students take the PSAT more than once because scores tend to increase with repetition and because it allows students to become more comfortable with taking standardized tests. During the junior year, the PSAT is also used as a qualifying exam for the National Merit Scholarship Program and the National Scholarship Service and Fund for Negro Students. It is also used in designating students for the National Hispanic Scholar Recognition Program. The test includes questions covering verbal, math, and writing skills.

Verbal question types:
Sentence completion questions ask you to choose a word or words that fill in the blanks in a given sentence. They test how well you can use context clues and word meanings to complete a sentence.
Analogies present a pair of words that have some logical relationship. Then the choices present other pairs of words. You have to choose the pair that has the same kind of relationship as the first pair.
Critical reasoning questions relate to a passage that is provided for you to read. The passage can be about almost anything, and the questions after it test how well you understood the passage and the information in it.

Math question types:
Multiple-choice questions give you a problem in arithmetic, algebra, or geometry. Then you choose the correct answer from the five choices.
Quantitative comparison questions test your skills in comparing information and in estimating. You’ll see two quantities, one in Column A and one in Column B. Your job is to compare the two quantities and decide if one is greater than the other, if they are equal, or if no comparison is possible.
Grid-ins do not give you answer choices. You have to compute the answer and then use the bubbles on the answer sheet to fill in your solution.

Writing skills:
Identifying sentence error questions are designed to measure your ability to identify grammatical errors, incorrect usage, poor diction, and faulty use of idiom.
Improving sentence questions test your capacity to identify, from five choices, the sentence that is the most clear and precise, least awkward or ambiguous, and most effective in expression.
Improving paragraphs questions require you to make choices that will improve the logic, coherence, and organization of a passage in need of revision as well as to identify faulty sentences within the passage.
